Gurgaon: Weighing-in-motion sensors will soon be installed at all toll plazas in the city, including Kherki Daula, to check overloaded commercial vehicles. According to the norms, overloaded vehicles have to pay 10 times the toll at plazas to proceed with transportation of goods.
The sensors automatically detect the weight of the vehicles passing through toll plazas without requiring them to stop. The decision was taken at the monthly road safety meeting chaired by the deputy commissioner on Tuesday.
Officials said installation of the sensors at the Kherki Daula, Sohna and Gurgaon-Faridabad toll plazas — a first for the region — will help in checking movement of overloading vehicles. At present, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) checks vehicles manually for overloading, which isn’t very effective and has often led to allegations of corruption.
Deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav also directed officials to mitigate accidents at blackspots and also identify the areas where crashes are likely to happen. Pedestrian safety on roads like Gajraj Singh Marg, Vikas Marg, Kadipur Chowk-Pataudi Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk-Himgiri Chowk, Sector 22A road, Rajiv Chowk, Shankar Chowk and Narsinghpur was also discussed.
