Teliamura Jan 12: State Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department has been working tirelessly to create public awareness about the importance of correct weights and measures so as to protect public interest at every stage from production to marketing in compliance with the international standard bodies, said minister Sushanta Choudhury.
Choudhury made the statement on Friday as he inaugurated the newly constructed office cum standard laboratory of the Legal Metrology Department at Teliamura built at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.
Addressing the program, the minister said, “Importance of accurate measurement in our daily life is immense and no product can be a quality product if the measurement of all the components is not appropriate. Therefore, making the people aware about this issue is utmost necessary at present times”.
Besides, the task of trade facilitation will be further accelerated on ensuring the use of the same international unit at every level of the production and distribution system, he said.
Sushanta further said, “The state Consumer Affairs Dept. is working to ensure the provision of products and services in the right measure, including getting open information to the customers by converting from traditional to digital systems that ensures protection of customer interests”.
Pointing out Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for “Digital India”, the Food and Civil Supplies minister said, “Measurement through digital methods is a complete, reliable and important part of business and consumer level”.
“The department carries out regular or surprise inspections in the markets, fair price shops, petrol pumps, and gas agencies to check whether measuring and weighing units bear valid verification stamps and deliver correct weight, measure or volume of commodities”, he added.
The department also initiates prosecution action against short measurement, use of defective and non-standard weights and measures. It undertakes verification or calibration of auto-rickshaws or buses, tank lorries, and petrol dispensing units.
