With the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan, the Legal Metrology Department has intensified market inspections across various districts to ensure compliance with the Legal Metrology Act and other regulations.
Under the supervision of Controller, Legal Metrology, Anuradha Gupta, enforcement teams conducted inspections in multiple locations including Jammu, Doda, Rajouri, Srinagar, Kulgam and Bandipora.
In Doda, a joint inspection was carried out in coordination with the district administration, covering around 40 traders. In Srinagar, LMD teams inspected Batmalloo and Tengpora areas, imposing and collecting penalties amounting to Rs 6,000 from offenders on the spot.
In Rajouri, inspections were conducted at various shops, including meat and poultry outlets, in collaboration with the district administration. One person was booked, and a composition sum of Rs 1,000 was imposed. In Jammu, six cases were compounded, and a total fine of Rs 8,000 was collected.
Additionally, in Kulgam, a market inspection drive was conducted, leading to the registration of four cases against erring traders and a total composition sum of Rs 6,500 was realised. In Bandipora, three cases were booked, and a composition sum of Rs 1,500 was collected.
Anuradha Gupta reiterated the department’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring fair trade practices, particularly during Ramadan. She emphasised that traders must strictly adhere to the Legal Metrology Act and related regulations while selling essential commodities.
