IP cameras must at weighbridge stations

Kolkata : The transport department has issued a directive making the installation of IP-based Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Bullet cameras mandatory at weighbridge stations across the state. These cameras must cover both the front and rear sides of each weighing platform, complementing the existing CCTV systems.

The department now requires direct access to these IP cameras, and all weighbridge data must be uploaded on the VAHAN portal. Weighbridge operators have to implement the guideline within two weeks to avoid penal action.

Overloaded goods vehicles have been identified as a major cause of road damage, accidents, mechanical failures, and traffic congestion. In response, Transport secretary Saumitra Mohan issued new regulations to ensure the smooth operation of weighbridge stations and improve compliance with road safety laws. Recent random checks by motor vehicle officials revealed gross violations of rules by a large section of weighbridge operators that allowed overloaded goods vehicles to move freely.

The new guidelines for weighbridge-cum-check posts, especially those at state borders, are intended to enforce provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act,1988.
