According to the latest report by Global Market Insights, Inc.,

By 2026, the market for automobile weigh-in-motion systems will be worth over $3 billion. The market demand will be boosted by the government’s increasing interest in adopting smart transportation to deliver smooth and safe transportation.

Increased government spending on smart transportation is a crucial factor driving up demand for automobiles in motion. Many reputable organisations in the United States have recommended the use of intelligent transportation systems to improve vehicle mobility and safety. South Korea, for example, has committed to investing over USD 3.2 billion by 2020 as part of its intelligent transportation system strategy.

The single load cell is the most accurate sensor of all the types of sensors available in the industry. On highways, this type of sensor has an accuracy of above 6% or even better. A single load cell sensor can survive up to 12 years with proper maintenance, installation, and calibration. Calibration is performed annually at sites that require highly accurate data.

On-board weigh-in-motion systems, in-board weigh-in-motion systems, and weight bridge systems are all examples of automotive weigh-in-motion systems. Bridge WIM is a unique dynamic weighing device that uses sensors connected to bridge soffits. The sensors in these systems measure the strains induced by bridge bending as a result of a big vehicle passing beneath it. Bridge WIM provide extra information about bridge behaviour in addition to the data collected by other WIM systems, which is useful for assessing bridge safety. As a result, in 2026, this segment will have a demand share of more than 10%.

With a sales share of over 20%, weight-based trolling applications saw a considerable increase in demand in the vehicle weigh in motion market in 2019. The toll is usually calculated depending on the vehicle’s weight or cargo. Automotive weigh in motion not only ensures that tolling systems are priced correctly and fairly, but also helps to generate funds for road infrastructure upkeep.

During the projected period, high-speed WIM systems are expected to grow at a rate of 7.3 per cent. Benefits afforded by these systems over low-speed WIM systems are linked to the industry’s above-average growth rate. These systems give traffic monitoring and measuring data without interfering with traffic flow, hence reducing traffic congestion. Many countries in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and South Africa, use the technology.

North America hold a share of over 28% in the global automotive weigh in motion market in 2019. Regional demand is highly dependent on strict regulations regarding traffic safety and overloading vehicles. However, both the U.S. and Canada have been witnessing a significant drop-in commercial transportation activity, which may hamper the industry growth in the short run. In the U.S., the COVID-19 impact is more severe where the commercial activity is almost 63% less than normal transportation activity.

In 2019, North America has a market share of over 28% in the worldwide automotive weigh in motion industry. Regional demand is highly reliant on tight traffic safety and vehicle overloading laws. However, commercial transportation activity has been declining in both the United States and Canada, which could slow the industry’s growth in the short term. COVID-19 has a greater impact in the United States because commercial activity is nearly 63 per cent lower than regular transportation activity.
